    YARA-GRCG in August

    2009-08-10-yara-grcg-gardeners-016

The weather has finally warmed up again after a cool July. It has been one of the coolest months on record that anyone can remember.  In fact, friends in Vancouver have boasted about eating red tomatoes before Saskatchewanites. It’s crazy!

Today the garden in buzzing with the activity of watering as the temperature gauge finally reached 29 degrees Celcius again and the forecast for the rest of the week is more of the same.

Everyone you talk to is taking home baskets of vegetables.  The bounty includes peas, beans, potatoes, carrots, eggplants, cucumbers, cabbage, zuchinni, spinach, lettuce, swiss chard, collarabi and even the odd ‘red’ tomato.

Every time I visit the garden is seems like the corn has grown another foot.  When you look around, it is actually possible to miss someone hidden behind the corn and sunflowers. Even though the corn may be stretching for the sky, no one will see a corn husk for another 5 to 6 weeks.

I love the color and contrast in the garden. Flowers at the entrance and throughout the garden add beauty and fragrance that attracts both beneficial insects and humans alike. The pollinators have been active and the results are everywhere!
