YARA-GRCG in Fall
It was a beautiful fall day for the Fall BBQ and Food Bank harvest on September 26th. The event was well attended with several people enjoying community at one of the last activities of the season at YARA – Grow Regina Community Garden in 2009.
Many gardeners were busy collecting their vegetables for their cupboards, as well as, donations to the Food Bank. The year produced amazingly large potatoes which are displayed in the photos below. Other vegetables harvested included tomatoes, carrots, beets, swiss chard and onions. As always, the Food Bank was onsite with their truck to deliver produce directly to cold storage. In weeks prior to the BBQ, the Food Bank also made several stops to collect fresh vegetables from the garden as they became ripe. Up to 5,000 lbs of fresh produce was donated to The Regina Food Bank as part of the Plant a Row ● Grow a Row (PAR●GAR) program.
Looking back, this day was one of the last days to cleanup the gardens before the rains began… and continued for two to three weeks before we saw sunshine again. Many gardeners were caught with root crops still in the ground until October 22nd because the gardens were just too wet to enter.
