How to Plant a Tree
Some people choose to plant a fruit tree to commemorate a special occasion or person at YARA-Grow Regina Community Garden, while others plant a fruit tree simply to enjoy the bounty.
Since 2008 up to 50 fruit trees, shrubs and vines are now planted at the north eastern and north western corners of YARA-Grow Regina Community Garden site. These fruit trees planted in the YARA-GRCG Orchard by members include: Apple, Cherry, Plum, Pear, Grape, Saskatoon, Sea Buckthorn, Pin Cherry, Hazelnut, Haskap, Raspberry, Gooseberry, and Blueberry. You may even see some Rhubarb.
If you would like to learn more about planting a tree at YARA-GRCG, please contact the Orchard Committee at 352-4812 or email contact@growregina.ca
Here are some tips to help you get started:
- Planting of bare root plants is best done in early spring with fully dormant plant.
- Pre-soak the bare roots in water overnight, plants already budding are best planted in the evening or under cloudy condition.
- For potted plants, remember separate or cut ‘root bound’, otherwise the roots will continue to grow in a circular pattern and eventually choke out.
- Dig holes wide enough to accommodate all of the root system.
- Cut off broken root part, set the plants with the graft union 2 inches above the ground line.
- Work the soil in and around the roots.
- When the hole is half full, pack the soil firmly. Fill the hole and firm the soil.
- Water thoroughly to soak the soil around the tree roots.
