No More Composting at YARA-GRCG
Hello everyone!
Sad news – At our last Board meeting we voted unanimously to end the composting at the Grow Regina garden site, effective immediately. (In fact I see that one bin & compost pile has been taken away already).
Please — DO NOT leave any compost, garden waste, weeds, garbage etc anywhere on the Grow Regina site. (and not in the storm channel or port-a-potty either for goodness sake!) Please take it home with you and dispose of in your own compost or garbage. If you see others disposing of anything in the spots where the bins used to be, please remind them that there is no composting anymore …
Why has this been done?
Unfortunately we were never well set up to compost, and never managed to get good compost back into the gardens, for a number of reasons. It has proven impossible to “police” the compost bins and so unfortunately some gardeners and others are throwing plastic, garbage, string and weeds into the compost. This of course means that the pile cannot be shredded and dug into gardens as originally intended. We simply do not have the ability to ensure good quality compost and so the present bins had become a collection site for all manner of items and now we could see no solution but to have them removed altogether.
A number of us would like to see composting established at Grow Regina in the future but until we find a way to do it effectively we will not be able to offer this on-site. (If you have any ideas or suggestions for how this could be done, we would be happy to hear from you)
Which brings me to …

Happy harvesting,
- Yvette

That is one of the best decisions that the board has made. There was a bin not too far from my plot and it was always an eyesore. Last year I used to haul the trash home on a regular basis. In the fall, everything ended up there and until recently it was nothing but a garbage dump.
Finally, it has been cleaned up.
Everyone, take your own compost home. That includes you corn growers too!
